Hilumin Mo

Just three days before he was due to graduate from college, my friend Raymund was detained for seven years, accused of a murder he never comitted. Instead of succumbing to depression, he taught his inmates math, grammar, reading and writing. He even wrote a book regarding the national criminal justice system. He found himself and his God.

I can identify myself with him when I was confined in a small room due to sickness. I felt the whole gamut of sorrows of the human heart. These raw feelings came as I learned to let go of my old notion that God would take in against me for being so inquisitive. Painting Him led me to believe that He is with me despite His seeming absence. As I painted this youth in jail, it was as though I was looking at myself in a mirror.

Raymund’s story is truly inspiring. And the title is very comforting. again, thanks for sharing Ms Winkie. πŸ™‚

joey velasco’s paintings are always inspiring and comforting. maybe because they are drawn from the heart.

  18. September 3, 2009 6:53 pm

Eto ang inaabangan ko every month dito eh. πŸ™‚

Parang si Paul diba? While he was in jail, nagppreach pa din sya sa mga jailguards. This only means na kahit anu pang situation ang meron tayo, let’s make the mos out of it and use it for God’s glory.

God bless you, Ate Winkie! πŸ™‚

wow, tagasubaybay ka na pala ng paintings dito. thanks joycee!

korek jan, joycee! actually, ung mga hardships sa buhay, they make us closer to God. i remember in one of the retreats i attended, sometimes God cuts the string that connect Him to us. so when we try to knot it so we get connected back with him, the string becomes shorter and shorter to draw us closer to Him. (parang ganyan, di ko ma-express in summary eh! whehehe!)

  19. September 4, 2009 12:39 am

Your friend is one cool dude. – an inspiration. God bless him!

i don’t personally know the character in the story… this is joey velasco’s writing po.

anyhow, glad you got insipired by this πŸ™‚

hmmm… i didn’t notice that lio ah! very keen obsevation though. but i don’t think that was joey’s intention. i don’t know. maybe you are right. ganun naman sa painting, people can interpret it the way they want.

I like the painting the best. It’s like the story of “Footprints in the Sand”

When the boy thought that God abandoned him already because he only sees one set of footprints, he was surprised that it was the footprints of God carrying him already.

oo nga noh! i like that story, too. it’s a good reminder that God will never leave us most especially on our lowest moment in life.

Nice entry… Joey Velasco is indeed a gifted man… I once entered his exhibit here in SM City Cebu and I came out of the exhibit filled with grace… There was session with him that day and he delivered a talk about his life and his passion… To my surprise he singled me out of the group… And he said I looked like an artist…

After the talked, I lined up for him to sign some posters of his paintings… In exchange I also gave a signed photograph from me – a low-light picture of the second Mactan Bridge…

yeah… that’s why i feature his paintings here every month. it’s really worth sharing.

wow, may signed foto mo si joey velasco?! penge rin ako! hehehehe!
