Please don’t make me call you, ok?!

June 25, 2009

My apologies for not posting anything lately. Maybe I’m also experiencing the so-called “writer’s block”. But since I don’t consider myself that much of a writer, I guess I am just having some pretty boring days lately and there ain’t much “bloggable” incidents happened to me in the past few days. Later in the afternoon today though, I was able to experience one “bloggable” experience. And so, I’m blogging it out.

My boss’s secretary handed me an envelop a little past 4 pm. I got surprised to receive a credit card billing statement at work since all my personal correspondences are sent to my home address. Well, I just don’t want any of my personal things handled at work. Besides, my home address is a more permanent thing for me than my office address 🙂

When I opened the envelope, I saw that I was billed for the annual fee of that credit card. And so, I immediately grabbed my phone and dialed the credit card company’s hotline number.

At first, I had trouble connecting and so I tried again. On the second time, I was able to speak to one of their customer service representatives. And here is the course of our conversation:

CSR: Thank you for calling _____________. How may I help you?

Moi: Hi Miss! I have a case here. I received a call from your bank and offered me a credit card. I instantly refused but a week later I received the card via mail. I didn’t activate it and now I am being charged with a P1,500-annual fee?

CSR: I’m sorry for that error, Ma’am! Can I first get your card number?

– Other details were asked, too. Credit card inquiry protocol, y’know. –

CSR: Thank you for those information, Ma’am. Can I put you now on hold for a minute or two so I could check on your account?

Moi: Ok, sure.

After a minute or so, I heard the CSR’s voice again,

CSR: Sorry to keep you waiting, Ma’am. It says here that you are being billed with the annual fee.

Moi: (Getting a little pissed off) That’s the reason for my call. Why am I being charged with that?

CSR: Ma’am, if you want you can pay this over 6 months.

Moi: (Really trying not to get pissed off) Miss, I told you I didn’t apply for the card. Why am I being charged for that? Can you just please cancel the card?

CSR: Ma’am, if we offer you waiver, will you instead keep the card? But it will still be subject for approval. And you can call us back next week to know if it gets approved.

Moi: (Got pissed off) Miss, uulitin ko lang at lilinawin ko for you. Your company called me a month ago, offered me a credit card and I said NO. After a week, I was surprised to receive the card. I didn’t activate it. It is not my first time to get a card. A card holder can’t be charged unless the card is activated. So why did you charge me for an inactive card?

CSR: Ma’am, your card is already activated.

Moi: (Got more pissed off) I told you, I didn’t ask to have it activated. Are you trying to tell me your company sends activated cards! That’s wrong! For all you know, anybody can use that card . Can you put that complaint on record?!

CSR: Sorry for that, Ma’am. Yes, I will take note of that.

Moi: Can you just cancel my card?!?! And please make sure that the charges are reverted. I don’t want to get negative records for this.

CSR: Ma’am, don’t you really want to keep and use the card for future emergency use?

Moi: (Got pissed off again) Miss, cancel mo na lang. Nagupit ko na yung card nyo the moment I received it. Again, make sure the fee is cancelled as well.

CSR: Ok, Ma’am. Would that be all?

Moi: Yes. Thank you.

CSR: Thank you, Ma’am.

This call really got into my nerve this afternoon. I know, the CSR was just doing her job to keep their clients. But I really got pissed off with that freaking bank slash credit card company that sent me a something I didn’t apply for and immediately refused. Well, I don’t anymore need any new credit card. I just wanted the card cancelled and the fee reverted asap. You see, I’m really very careful when it comes to financial records. I have been in the lending business in all my professional life and I freaking know how it works. Of course, I wouldn’t pay for that annual fee. And if I don’t have it reverted, my credit record will be doomed for quite some time and it won’t allow me to avail of more important financial assistance (i.e. housing loan, car loan, personal loan, etc.) should I need one.

Sorry for venting this one out. I hope you also take precautions should things like this happen to you.

    puso mo kapatid…

nangyari na rin sa’kin yan…well, more of singilan blues ang nangyari sa’kin…nagbayad na ako napa-cancel ko na yung credit card, after three months, leche! hinde pa daw ako bayad at may civil case na raw laban sa’kin…kulang na lang kutsarahin ko yung mata nung kausap ko sa galit e

okay na ako sis. nahimasmasan na! hehehe!

hay naku, simpleng insidente lang yan noh?! dati, one major credit card company told me that i have pre-approved loan worth P50K. syempre, i declined din. then come billing time, sinisingil ako ng P50K. claimed daw ung check. eh di ko naman talaga na-claim. lintek na yun, di nila ako pinatulog nun. first thing the next morning i called them at nakatikim sila ng ultimate nagging sa akin. and that was the start of my being sungit with those freaking credit cards. hehehe!

  2. June 25, 2009 7:43 pm

Nakakainis naman! Kahit ako nainis ako noong binasa ko to. Bakit naman chinarge ka ng annual fee eh nagrefuse ka nga in the first place.. tapos activated pa ang card kaagad? Haiz!!

hay reese, i was really pissed off when i received the billing statement. kaasar talaga!

yep, we monitor credit records here in pinas. all mishandled bank accounts (loans and deposits) as well as other financial matters are being reported to an agency. and all the banks get info from that agency before they grant loan to clients. even those who opt to open checking accounts are checked through that agency.

but our system here is still not as keen as that of USA’s credit report system.

    ahi hi hi

    Unionbank, Maldito!

    Hehehe!

    • June 26, 2009 5:02 pm

ay sos! pasaway talaga yan! even my Mom had tons of problem with that bank. Imagine, 3 buwan nang hinde dumarating yung billing statement nya. We asked them to fax a copy to us para naman alam ni Mama kung magkano ise-settle nya.

oh rhona, ang puso! remember, nakastapler lang yan! hehehe! hay naku, buti na lang pala at pina-cut ko ung card. else i’d experience the same problem. hehehe! baka di maganda ng billing system ng unionbank kaya ganun. ung ibang card companies naman, esp those i have cards with, are prompt in sending billing statement. ask your mom to post a complaint para they could improve on it.

    eto madalas mangyari sa akin.

CSR : Hi, Good Morning! I’m ___ from Company Name, an accredited service provider of BANK NAME. You are pre-selected for our promo blah-blah.
    SS : O, ok.
CSR : We are are offering blah-blah-blah…. blah-blah-blah.. free card membership for life.. blah-blah-blah…
    SS : O, I’m sorry. I’m not interested.
CSR : O, why is that? Can you give us your reason? This is a once in a lifetime offer.
SS : Ok, look! You called me to offer your card and I said I’m not interested. Why then I have to explain myself to you? Is it my responsibility to give you a valid reason to refuse your offer?
CSR : Ah eh. Ok, sir. Thank you.

    • June 26, 2009 1:53 pm

@ SS, naku marami na rin akong natanggap na ganyang calls. meron pa ung credit sheild daw. insurance of some sort that if i die *knock on wood* eh my balance with their company will be paid off. so no need na daw for my family to pay it off. eh siraulo pala sila, pag namatay ang card holder, wala talagang magbabayad nun dahil ung cardholder lang ang responsible sa card debts. it’s not guaranteed nor covered with promissory note! haller?!?! i wasn’t born yesterday! hehehe!

      *waves at kikay*

  6. June 26, 2009 5:25 am

    hi epfi… haymishu!!!

  10. June 26, 2009 11:08 am

bat kayo meron kayong credit card kahit hindi kayo naga apply..

gusto ko rin ng credit card..

well, most of the card companies buy names of good paying card holders from other card companies. i have a strong feeling, unionbank did that exactly so they got my name. but since i initially declined the card, they shouldn’t have issued me one…. and as i said what is worse, activated cya!

why not try to apply for one. but be careful ah! baka ma-addict ka sa pagswipe nun… kaw din mahihirapan mag bayad. it happens to most first-time card holders.

  11. June 26, 2009 12:48 pm

hwaw! talagang natranscribe mo word for word, winkie? bilib ako. 😀 narecord mo ba yung komberseyshun?

achwali *pop fernandez’s tone*, nirecord ko sila. bago kami nag-usap nung CSR, she heard this from my end “this conversation will be recorded. so be careful with what you will say to this b**ch!” whehehe!

  12. June 26, 2009 3:58 pm

nyay, ang luho mo mars! twice pa lang ako nagkaroon ng P40K billing for booking online tickets. and they got paid immediately in full. well, im just suprised why u still have a P16K balance if u say you had arranged for debt resstruturing with the card company. for me that’s quite absurd. unless, you had other purchases after that restructuring arrangement.

as to your friend, im guessing he used the card in pinas then flew to where he is now. well maybe, the card company could no longer locate him kaya feeling nya walang naghahabol. but im sure, that card company already posted him in the negative files. for now he wont mind that negative record but would greatly affect him once he decides to get a bank loan in the future. you know, just recently, i did not endorse a friend’s loan application at the bank i’m working for. ang daming unpaid credit cards. it was a red flag for us not to accommodate him kasi there’s a greater risk that he might not handle his account well with us should we grant him another loan. ganyan ung effect nun. so as i said, we all need to be careful with things like this.

hope you did not get offended with my reply. 😛

  13. June 26, 2009 5:06 pm

Winkie, totoo ba yun? Kasi, di ba sabi nila walang nakukulong sa utang…sabi nung isang financial guru ek ek e hinde ka pwedeng i-force na magbayad nung mga crad companies lalo na kung wala ka naman talaga ibabayad…hinde daw totoo yung maiilit bahay mo or something…is that true?

well well well, that financial guru ek ek is right.

you see, credit cards are just bound by terms and conditions. no card holder is asked to sign a promissory note so card companies could NOT file a case in court nor have the card holder put in prison. they could not take away your possessions as payment for loan kasi clean loan naman cya. repossessions are only applicable to those loans covered with collateral (i.e. housing loan, auto loan, business loan vis-a-vis real estate mortgage). but still, credit card debts are debts need to be settled. simple lang ang rules sa cards, if you purchase, you pay. otherwise, there will be bigger problems in the future. see my reply on mars comment.

      kala mo totoo noh?! whehehe!

  14. June 26, 2009 5:56 pm

cool ka lang. hehe. at least u were able to handle the situation ver well. kaka-bilib. hehe

    ingats!

hehehe… im cool now mon. yep, i always handle them well naman. minsan lang talaga eh natetest ang sungit level ko. hehehe!

    Ingatz. 🙂

hehehe… gusto lang siguro talaga nila magdagdag ng clients. ang credit card dito sa pinas eh parang tatlo biente singko lang. these days, anyone can have a card. yngatz ka din, prinsesa ng drama!

galing naman nung customer service. tigas talaga. employee of the month yun. me, bad experience ko sa credit card…someone stole my identity and used it in mexico. thank god magaling yung bank ko.

actually di ko kasi na-gets ung 1st comment mo. parang out of this world lang. hehehe!

well, marami talagang MO and/or mishaps jan sa mga cards. this is just the simplest i’ve ever encountered.

thanks for the advice, jorge. but i have already handled this. normal naman sa kin to experience this kinda thing with cards. complaints are just a phone call away 🙂

  21. June 28, 2009 7:40 am

That exactly what had happened to me dun sa post ko where you were asking kung anong bank yun. I had called the bank’s number twice to cancel the card which I didn’t even applied for (although yung sa akin, unlike sa yo, ay hindi pa naman activated) and guess what, they just recently billed me at more than 2,000 na ang babayaran ko hehehe. I gave them a call again. The CSR apologized saying they have already canceled my card and no billing statement will be sent to me again. Sana nga.

yeah, i remember your post abt that card experience of yours. parehong bank ba, ms. N? whehehe!

    langyang teller yun 🙂 boblets

i really don’t have a need for an additional card. i have a couple of unused cards in my wallet… ang ganda lang nilang palamuti. hehehe! and yes, BI ang credit cards. makes you wanna buy more! lol.

  24. June 30, 2009 8:56 pm

    Sorry late 😦

hayz, im trying to control my anger. kasi naman di naman fault nung CSR ung sending of card… ang fault lang nya, mejo eng-eng sya. kaya in the end, naiinis pa rin ako! hahaha!

sayang din yung card. you may still keep it for emergency purposes. iwewaive naman nila yung fee eh. hehe, do i sound like one of them? sa bangko din kasi ako work, but im confident ndi yan bangko namin, we deliver cards unactivated eh. =)

i really don’t need an additional card. im actually having some of my cards cancelled now. im a banker as well and into loans so i know how this thing works. apparently, the card company called after a week and told na waived na nga. ang kulit di ba, sinabi nang nagupit ko na eh! hehehe!

i disclosed the bank’s name. *points at my reply to maldito’s comment*
