Weddings! Weddings! Weddings!

June 4, 2009

The month of June reminds me of 4 major things:

  • Back-to-school season… which correlates to high traffic as public transport will once again be plagued by students going to and from the malls for their cutting classes escapades their respective schools.
  • Ghie’s birthday… she is a close friend from HS and celebrates her special day every 2nd of June. Since the day I have known her, I never forgot to greet her on her special day. (Is this right, Ghie?)
  • Storm season… need I explain more??? Just this morning, I arrived at work with a  pair of uberly soaked pants.
  • Weddings! Weddings! Weddings!

But have you ever thought why June is being correlated to weddings? Well, I googled my way to know its origin. And this is what I’ve got from hubpages.com

According to ancient Druid legend, the gods and goddesses celebrate the coming of Spring with fertility rituals and mating during the fires of Beltane in May. Since it was unlucky to compete with these important deities, most couples planning a Spring wedding pushed out their celebrations to June, thus not angering the gods. Roman legend has it that Juno was the goddess of marriage so couples got married in June to honor her. Other legends mention that people took their annual bath in May, so in June were still relatively ‘fresh!’ Whatever the reason, June remains one of the most popular months to marry.

I have been interested in weddings since I can’t remember when. I guess it’s all but natural for young little girls to dream for a nice and grand wedding. I had the same dream when I was younger. I wanted to get married like a princess. Walking down a very long aisle. All eyes are on me… just me! All my guests – around 200 to 300 people –  stare at me admiring, dreaming and wishing me a happily married life. But that’s not what I want now. I’m way past believing in happily-ever after kinda weddings.

When I grew a little older, I got invited to a lot of weddings… from small chapels to big churches, from simple restaurants to grand hotels, and from barrios to gardens. I have witnessed a variety of themes, motifs and gimmicks but I normally pay more attention to the couple and pray on that very day for that love of each other to last until eternity

My attachment to weddings grew more and more each passing year. I organized some for friends for gratis.  And I even accommodated  some as side jobs as a day coordinator and/or wedding singer reception programme host.

Some months ago, I received an email from a friend about Jay Contreras (from Kamikazee) and Sarah Abad (Kaye Abad’s sister). It was the first-ever celebrity black wedding here in Pinas and it was held in no other than Paco Park… also known as Paco Cemetery. Others find it creepy and morbid… but I think otherwise. There’s nothing wrong with black as motif for a wedding since black is known for simplicity and elegance. And Paco Park is one heck of the nicest venue for a quiet, small yet romantic wedding.

Last month, Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos surprised the entire showbiz industry as well as the anticipating public with their unannounced wedding which was held in San Juan, Batangas. I have to say though that I salute the couple for pulling that off so successfully. I guess I wanted the same for my wedding (if and only if I will still get married). As I have mentioned so many times here in my blog, I wanted my big day celebrated near the beach… away from the press and paparazzis. LOL.

And just this morning, Umagang Kay Ganda featured the Star Wars-themed wedding of Tiger and Issa. It was my first time to see them on TV as they were not celebrities (I think!). But hey, this wedding is way beyond I have ever imagined. This is really one heck of a fun, cool, unique and creative wedding theme. So, I say kudos to the couple!

As for me, up to now, I’m still not sure if I will ever get the chance to walk down the aisle (my Mom is really dying for this day to come… and me as well!). But as I said, IF AND ONLY IF that day comes, it will definitely be a darn simple yet memorable one. I no longer intend to have a long list of guests na pati yung kapatid ng kapitbahay ng pinsan ng tita ng inaanak ko eh invited. I want mine to be a private event which will be attended only by the people who are really close to my and my groom’s hearts, just family and really really close friends. I don’t want it celebrated though in the midst a busy city. I want a destination beach wedding (how many times have I said this???) as I want all our very few and highly selected attendees to have a short getaway with me and my future hubby. Maybe, it will be our simple way of thanking them for being part of our past, present and future. I also do not intend to wear a very extravagant fit-for-princess gown as I feel I’m too old for that now. I would rather wear the simplest unornamented white dress I could ever find. And would you believe, I could settle for this as my wedding dress?

This will only cost my groom me $95. LOL.

So, no more fancy things for me. I just want it plain and simple. Besides, the most important part of a wedding is THE CEREMONY… God’s blessings on the union of 2 hearts with the promise of forever love.

Oh and guess when will I get married? On my groom’s birthday… the best birthday gift I could ever think to give my one great true love is myself… and the promise of my undying love from here til eternity. Hmp, corny!!! LOL. Actually, ang tunay na reason eh para pag wedding anniversary namin, 2-in1 na ang gift ko sa kanya. Hehehe!
